Newest & Upcoming Area Codes

New area codes activate somewhere in the country almost every year. These are the latest overlays coming online and what they cover.

Last updated June 5, 2026

TL;DR

New US area codes are added as overlays when a region nears number exhaustion. Recent and upcoming codes include 471 (Mississippi), 483 (Alabama), 465 (New York City), 748 (Colorado), 565 (Georgia), and 761 (Kentucky). Existing numbers don't change; new codes apply to new lines.

How a new code goes live

When projections show a region running out of prefixes, the numbering administrator and the state regulator approve relief, set an activation date, and publicize it. There's usually a permissive-dialing window during which both old and new dialing work, followed by mandatory 10-digit dialing once the overlay is active. Because the new code overlays the existing one, the rollout is invisible to current customers — until they order a new line and receive the new code.

Why so many new codes lately

Mobile phones, data devices, and number portability burn through numbering capacity quickly, especially in fast-growing Sun Belt metros. Texas, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas add codes most often. Browse the state pages to see which codes are in service versus planned.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the newest area code?

New codes activate frequently. Recent and upcoming ones in our directory include 471 in Mississippi, 483 in Alabama, and 465 in New York City. Each is an overlay on an existing code.

Will a new area code change my number?

No. New codes are overlays, so your existing number stays exactly the same. Only newly issued lines may receive the new code.

How do I find out if my area is getting a new code?

Check your state's page on this site, or watch for notices from your phone carrier and state public utility commission ahead of an activation date.
