How the area code lookup works

Type a three-digit area code into the box and the tool matches it against our directory of every active US area code. The moment it finds a match, it shows the primary city, state, and time zone that code serves, plus links to the full code page and the parent state. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere, so it's instant and private.

What the result tells you

  • City & state — where the code is primarily based. Large codes cover many surrounding communities, not just the named city.
  • Time zone — handy for knowing when it's reasonable to call. A few states span two zones, which we note on each state page.
  • Overlay status — the full code page shows whether the area uses overlays and requires 10-digit dialing.

A code not in the directory may be toll-free, unassigned, or reserved. See the complete numeric list or read how area codes work for the full picture.
