US Area Code Map
An interactive map of every US area code. Click any state to see its codes, filter by region, or search a code, city, or state. States are shaded by how many area codes they hold.
Click a state, or search above.
Puerto Rico is on the map; for the U.S. Virgin Islands (340) see its state page. Prefer a list? See all states or the numeric index.
How to use the area code map
The map shows all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico on a real geographic base map. Hover a state to see how many area codes it holds, and click it for a popup listing every code, each linked to its own page, plus a shortcut to the full state list. Use the region buttons above the map to zoom to the Northeast, Midwest, South, or West, or type into the search box to highlight matching states and list the codes beside the map.
Reading the shading
Each state is shaded by the number of area codes it contains, from light (a single code) to deep red (20 or more). The darkest states — California, Texas, New York, and Florida — carry the most codes because their large metros run overlays; wide rural states such as Montana and Wyoming still get by on one statewide code.
Other ways to explore
Prefer numbers or lists? Use the complete numeric index, browse by region or time zone, or look up a single code with the area code lookup tool. The base map uses OpenStreetMap tiles rendered with Leaflet.
